The US is considering ‘military intervention’ in the occupation of Greenland


The United States is discussing the use of military force over the occupation of Greenland. White House officials are also discussing various alternatives.

According to Reuters, the White House said on Tuesday local time that the autonomous island under Denmark is very important to the national security of the United States.

US President Donald Trump said that Greenland’s geographic location could play a major role in US security and military strategy. So bringing the island under US control is seen as a priority.

A warning message from the White House said that diplomacy is needed to achieve this goal, Political and if necessary military i.e. all kinds of avenues are being discussed.

According to the US Constitution, the president is the commander-in-chief of the military. As such, the Trump administration is considering the possibility of using force if it gets its orders.

Meanwhile, the European countries have taken opposite positions regarding the multifaceted threats of the United States in trying to occupy Greenland.

UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, The leaders of several European countries, including Spain and Denmark, expressed their support for Denmark in a joint statement. They made it clear, Only the people of Greenland have the right to decide the future of Greenland. And as they are under the monarchy of Denmark, no other country can interfere with it.

The statement also said that the security of the Arctic region should be ensured collectively through the framework of NATO. They also called on the United States to respect the principles of sovereignty and border integrity enshrined in the UN Charter.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned the United States that ‘if any military aggression is carried out in Greenland, Then it will put the unity and future of the NATO alliance at serious risk.’

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen welcomed the joint statement by European countries, ‘Greenland may be discussed. But it must be in accordance with international law, Respect for territorial integrity and be based on mutual respect.’

On the other hand, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, The United States currently has no plans to launch a military attack on Greenland. However, it has been kept under discussion as an alternative system, he said, “While the matter is being discussed, no aggressive decision has been taken yet.”
